This is an assignment I did for my Advanced Diploma Multimedia subject on introducing the famed Konami game Silent Hill. One of my favourite assignment of all time! The media file is developed and compiled in Macromedia Director (at that time it is still under Macromedia!), scripting in Lingo. The purpose of the media is to do a basic introduction to the game Silent Hill, the primary focus is on Silent Hill 3 (coz I just finished the game at that time) while covering a little bit of Silent Hill, since SH3 continues the story of SH1.
I am trying to mimic the superbly scary atmosphere of the Silent Hill universe. Most effects you see in the file, I stole the ideas from the game, like the layer of noise that is supposed to annoy the hell out of you during the game, haha. The iconic torchlight, too. But then, what about those spiffy effects like bloody foot steps and the distinctive noise made while Valtiel turns the valve to change between the normal and alternate version of Silent Hill? Well I planned them but don't have enough time to put them in... coz I kinda totally forgot about those during the development...
Click on those green texts to go to a new page or active/deactivate some fancy effects. Most green texts are clickable, so click on them!
Download the zipped .exe file here [silent_hill.zip (52mb)]. Use a Zip program like WinZip, WinRAR or 7zip to unzip the file. You should get a silent_hill.exe file. Play the media file by simply double-clicking on it. The loading process will take a few minutes, but after the initial loading, there shouldn't be any loading required while you are browsing through the other sections in this media file.
Please note that the video files used in this director file are not included, if you'd like to view them as well, download them here:
clip_elevator.mpg (10mb)
clip_mtv.mpeg (34mb)
clip_opening.mpg (36mb)
clip_wakingup.mpg (11mb)
Download these video files by right-clicking on the links and select "Save As" or "Save Link As", coz left-clicking will cause your browser to play these files in your Quick Time plugin. Place the files in the same directory as silent_hill.exe. When you start the .exe, it will prompt for those files, just click Ok, it is supposed to look for those files in the same directory, I have no idea why it is behaving like this.
I really enjoyed doing this assignment, and I got an A- for it, which is considered a pretty high grade for me; I think I got some marks deducted for the documentation section. Documentation is really tough, I spent only like 3 weeks doing the main media file, and 2 fricking months just to completely document it. You should notice there are very little animations in this media, coz the markers wont give mark for animations, since Im in a Computing course afterall, so they emphasize on the Lingo scripting. Most animations and motions and transition effects and special effects and whatever that moves are scripted using Lingo, coz no marks for using the canned plugins either.
I will add some preview pics when I'm free.
